In his youth, Mr. Fox (George Clooney) was a wily rebel who stole chickens from coops and wreaked havoc on unsuspecting farmers. But all that changed when Mrs. Fox (Meryl Streep) became pregnant. Well, it was supposed to. Flash forward twelve fox years. Now old foxy is a respectable newspaper columnist living the straight-and-narrow with his wife and son (Jason Schwartzman) in a sensible budget foxhole. But Mr. Fox wants more and, no matter the shirt and tie, he’s still a wild animal at heart.
So, despite the warnings of his badger lawyer (Bill Murray), Mr. Fox moves on up to a fancy treehouse overlooking the farms of the ruthless trio of Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. And before long, Mr. Fox just can’t resist getting up to some of his old chicken-poaching mischief. Of course, the farmers are quick to retaliate. Thus kicks off a knock-down-drag-out battle for species supremacy in the valley.
Wes Anderson’s take on Roald Dahl’s beloved story is downright delightful. With intricate hand-built model sets, rich textures, vivid color palette, killer soundtrack (natch), and cracking performances from an all-star voice cast, the auteur brought all his signature je n’ais se quoi to this deftly animated world. The result is, well, fantastic.
