Bruce Willis, as New York cop John McClane, comes to LA to try and patch things up with his estranged wife, Holly (played with steely yet vulnerable perfection by Bonnie Bedelia). After a blow-out argument at Holly’s office’s Christmas Eve party, McClane and Holly are surprised by the arrival of criminal mastermind, Hans Gruber (played by Alan Rickman in THE DEFINITIVE 1980’s VILLAIN performance), and his merry band of bank robbers as they take over the building and hold everyone hostage. As of yet unmatched for its minute by minute explosions, laughs, cocky swagger, and gonzo performances. You want to believe in the holidays again? Merry Christmas, mother f@!kers!

Channeling the Unusual Disposition of Luna Lovegood

Since my last post was about an entire outfit. I wanted to narrow this one to a specific item. This time the Spectrespecs – Enamel Pin Lapel Pin by The Geek Studio on etsy. Remember, with Nerding Out it can be as general as an entire fandom (ie. Harry Potter), or as specific as a single aspect of a character (ie. Luna’s Spectrespecs). In this case, it’s obviously a small nod to Luna Lovegood.

luna lovegood

“Some people call me ‘Loony’ Lovegood, actually.”

Luna Lovegood is a beloved character by many. My outfit for this shoot was all about being as low key as possible. The hat, dress, glasses, and necklace were just random items I had in my closet. I feel as if they give it a different personality, a more whimsical one like Luna’s. You can really pull off any dress or shirt with a pin of your choice. That’s what is so lovely about #NerdingOut, it’s simple and doesn’t have to cost a ton.

“The girl gave off an aura of distinct dottiness. Perhaps it was the fact that she had stuck her wand behind her left ear for safekeeping, or that she had chosen to wear a necklace of Butterbeer caps, or that she was reading a magazine upside down.”

Apologies for the delay in bringing you even more Nerding Out! I promise we’ll have more in the coming weeks. How do you bring Nerding Out into your style? We’ve been sharing photos on our Instagram of you guys! Make sure to share your photos with us by using #NerdingOut!

1. Washington DC – Pub Dread – A Halloween Themed Pop-Up Bar

From the folks behind the Game of Thrones and Stranger Things Pop-Up Bars, comes PUB DREAD!

Horror fans are cautiously welcome to sip drinks in The Haunted Forest, which features blinking eyes, creepy creatures, and soundtracks that call back to classic horror moments. The Dollhouse features the most disturbing tribute to grandma’s vintage toy collection with dolls that seem to have minds of their own. The Crypt features coffins, tombstones, and room for more to join the dead.

Horror films rule the drink menu, with inspiration taken from childhood favorites and true chillers that still spook adults. A Zombie variation called BRAINS! pays homage to Night of the Living Dead, and is served in a skull tiki mug and topped with a candy brain. The coffee concoction that signifies the start of fall brought forward David S. Pumpkins, a mix of rums, sherry, pumpkin, spice, and coconut.

Film Concerts Live! proudly presents the delightfully twisted comedy fantasy The Addams Family, with composer Marc Shaiman’s charming and imaginative orchestral score performed live to picture!  The all-star cast features Golden Globe nominee Angelica Huston as the alluring Morticia Addams, Raúl Juliá as the suave and devilish Gomez Addams, Christina Ricci in her breakthrough role as daughter Wednesday, and the inimitable Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester.

It’s 25 years since wealthy Gomez Addams’ older brother Fester disappeared.  When the family’s lawyer (Dan Hedaya) discovers that the son of a local loan shark bears a striking resemblance to Fester, he hatches a plan to bring Gomez’ long-lost brother back to life in order to take control of the family’s vast fortune.  But the Addams clan soon proves more than the unscrupulous lawyer bargained for.  As the imposter Fester grows closer to the family, the line between impersonation and reality blurs, and he begins to recall memories that he never knew existed.  Could he truly be an Addams after all…?

Bring NerdingOut Into Your Everyday Style

Nerding Out is a stylized way to bring nerdiness into your everyday life. On a personal level, it’s also much easier and enjoyable. I’ve tried cosplay in the past, and I didn’t feel comfortable in it. Other than my most recent cosplay, Lara Croft, I’ve always felt like a fake in cosplay. (not sure why Lara is the exception) After nearly two years of trying, I had just about given up. I’d stick to my jeans and graphic t-shirts. Except…I got tired of that. Having a closet more than half full of graphic t-shirts was getting old. So old, some of them I had owned since I entered college. However, my mind soon changed.

I did a shoot with a friend, Katie York, in more casual attire than cosplay, but fancier than a t-shirt. And guess what, I greatly enjoyed it! More then enjoyed, I was thrilled with the results (see below)! From that, the Nerding Out seed was planted.

Nerd Out Squad

A couple months back, I created the Nerd Out Squad. It is the social club branch of Nerd Out. The need for such a group grew from wanting more than just a quick snap with other nerds, I wanted to connect. Community has always been the main objective for Nerd Out as a whole. So we decided to make that the focus of the Squad and it’s really resonated. With nearly 900 members in just a few short months, it’s been a wild ride! Events ranging from a Guardians of the Galaxy Brunch to a Back to Hogwarts day at Universal Studios Hollywood. With this in mind, a lifestyle aspect to Nerd Out was the next step. Between the photoshoot with Katie and the Squad, #NerdingOut was born.

#NerdingOut incorporates nerdy style into your every day.

A spin off from Casual Cosplay in that the outfits are inspired by your favorite character. But in Nerding Out it can be as general as an entire fandom (ie. Star Trek), or as specific as a single aspect of a character (ie. Luna’s Spectrespecs). It’s all about how you style it and what works for you! And of course, where you’re Nerding Out! Are you Nerding Out at one of the thousands of events we’ve listed on our Calendar?

Elhoffer Design

One of the designers that encapsulates Nerding Out is Elhoffer Design. Katie, founder of Elhoffer Design, prefers “a subtle geek nod in her designs, using silhouette, color, texture, and lines to tell the story of the character or fandom.” I wore her Magical Maxi Wrap Dress in Crimson and Gold on a sunny morning in Griffith Park. I also wore it to our Back to Hogwarts event! It was great to wear in the park as it wasn’t restricting as some cosplays can be. Most importantly, I felt great in it.

Happy 2nd Birthday Nerd Out!

Two years ago, Nerd Out became available in app stores. Two years and about 5 months ago I first came up with the idea of an event calendar for nerds. For those of you who haven’t heard our origin story. It all sparked when I had trouble finding events as they were scattered across different platforms. Today, we no longer have that issue. The calendar is not only available on the app, but as a website. For 77 locations across the United States, England, and Canada they have one central location, Nerd Out. 77 locations is the most we’ve ever had! And we’re not stopping there. Our plan is to fill out the rest of the United States, then the United Kingdom and Canada. From there we’ll add other locations such as Australia and more of Europe. Then….WORLD DOMINATION!

Big changes are coming for Nerd Out. I feel we have begun a new chapter of our story and I’m so thrilled to be able to share it with all of you. First, if you’re reading this you’ll probably notice we have a brand new website! We’re still working on a couple of bugs, but we wanted to bring you a site that focuses strongly on the events, rather than just a landing page. We’re also going to be adding in a load more giveaways and discounts for you guys. Think Groupon for Nerds. We want to give you guys more and this is the beginning of it. So make sure to sign up for the Top 5 Events Guide for your area. And check out our giveaway page for a special birthday present from Wizard World Chicago!

We’ve also decided to pull Gaming from the app. Not all gaming, gaming based conventions and special events will remain, but the weekly MtG and FNM type events are gone. We made this decision based on user feedback. But also because nearly every comic store has these events and we want to focus on the more unique events you aren’t going to find anywhere else.

Another big change here is Nerd Out Adventures

An adventure awaits you with fellow nerds into the landscapes of your favorite books, films and TV shows. Travel to far off places, delve into activities like your favorite characters, and most importantly…meet new friends!

We’re so excited to bring you physically to these amazing locations. They will be a unique and unforgettable trips with fellow nerds! It really is the pinnacle of what Nerd Out is all about (Find friends. Do cool stuff.) Make sure to sign up for the Nerd Out Adventures newsletter to be the first to know about our upcoming trips!

The Nerd Out Squad is going strong with it approaching 800 members in just a matter of months! The Squad is created as a social club. To give nerds a place to meetup, mix & mingle, and get to know each other. This has been our favorite part of Nerd Out lately as we’ve been able to meet a number of you in person! I do hope you join us soon if you haven’t already 😉

Finally, we have some excellent stuff in the pipeline. We don’t want to give too much away so I’ll just leave you with a sprinkle of hints. With the Squad doing so well, we’ve decided to bring more of a “lifestyle” aspect to the company. Keep an eye out for what #NerdingOut will be. Also, a podcast maybe in the works for you guys to get a behind the scenes on what it’s like here at Nerd Out HQ!

A special shoutout to those behind the scenes making it all happen! Danielle, you’re a lovely person to work with and an even better friend. I’m so glad we were finally able to meet this summer! You’ve been a part of Nerd Out for a while via the Nerd Squad (volunteers who help submit events) and now are part of the company as our marketing/outreach branch. I truly appreciate you!

Nick, you take care of the blog for me. It is a huge help to have a arm of the beast taken care of. You’re a great champion of the Nerd Out brand and it is greatly appreciated. You as well, were part of the Nerd Squad and have been with us for a while. I truly appreciate your help!

Lisa you’ve been an inspiration to me. I see you as a big sister I have and will learn loads from. I’m so happy we sat down back in February for dinner as it has changed the direction of Nerd Out for the better! I can’t wait to galavant to far off places with you! You’re one of the strongest, most intelligent, and worldly people I know! Lots of love to you!

I’d like to thank you (yes YOU reading this right now!) for supporting us these last 2 years! It is because of you we do this. Nerd Out has always been about community. Helping others, bringing people together, and giving you an experience you can’t get anywhere else. We can’t wait to share with you even more amazingness! It means so much to us that we’re all in this together. Here’s to many, many more years to come!

May the Force of July Be With You

In a galaxy far, far away there was a Force of July Boat Party! This past weekend in San Diego was a Star Wars party like none other I’ve ever attended. The Force of July party was held by LoveLife on a Hornblower boat which took us around the San Diego bay. Starting around sunset and finally docking around 10pm. Sadly, it was cloudy so we couldn’t see any stars from galaxies far, far away. But, there was there was plenty other force worthy things to see…

Party All Night

It all started at the pre-party at Kettner Exchange. Our Brand Advocate and Social Media master Emilee Jean Adamson was in attendance and had a great time! Then line up for the main event began. It was definitely interesting watching all the guests arrive. It was a mix of die-hard Star Wars fans and those who appeared to be the usual party crowd of San Diego, making it an eclectic group of attendees. This was LoveLife’s second year doing a Star Wars themed party. Previously, it had taken place during the San Diego Comic Con weekend which drew more of the SDCC crowd.

Play It Mr. Wookie DJ

For being a Star Wars themed party I expected some mixing of Star Wars score into the house music. However, that didn’t seem to be the case. If one of the DJs did that, I missed it. The music was still pretty solid and there were loads of people up on the top deck where the DJs were. Aside from the music there was a photo booth with props guests could utilize (see below). Food and drink were also available.

Use the Force

The coolest thing at any Star Wars event is always the light saber battles! While there wasn’t a whole lot of space on the top deck, we did make it work! Emilee and some other attendees battled it out against the dark side! The party didn’t stop at the boat though! It went onto the Blonde Bar! While my crew didn’t forge ahead, a number of other guests did and had a blast! The Force of July was definitely an experience I’ll not soon forget!

The Best Cosplay at Sherlocked USA

The LAX Marriott hosted the first ever Sherlocked USA convention on May 26th-28th, 2017. The convention revolved around…you guessed it, BBC Sherlock! Which of course included cosplay! The convention, which first premiered in the United Kingdom, featured guests Andrew Scott, Mark Gatiss, Una Stubbs, Timothy Carlton, Alistair Petrie, Louis Moffat, Steven Moffat, Sue Vertue, Wanda Ventham, Jonathan Aris, and Arwel Wyn Jones. Attendees of Gallifrey One will know this is the same location that Gally takes place, and it was run by some of the same personnel.

A BBC Sherlock Convention

It was the first time Nerd Out attended a Sherlock Holmes only convention. While the convention was not as fully attended as Gallifrey One, there was still lots of lovely attendees to meet from all over the world! People from Australia, Canada, France, Chile, and more came out for the event! Our founder Michelle was a guest on three panels; Science of Deduction, Being a Sherlock Fan, and Setlocked.

Science of Deduction: Exploring common techniques used to make simple deductions and how they apply to Sherlock.  Hosted by Baker Street Babes.

Being a Sherlock Fan: Join the panel to discuss the dedication and commitment needed to be a Sherlock fan.

Setlocked: Arwel Jones and The Baker Street Babes talk about being on location and meeting the fans.

The Best Cosplay at Sherlocked USA

Nerd Out hosted a cosplay meetup on Saturday during lunch for anyone who wished to attend. It was lovely to see those who put in the little extra effort to bring their best cosplays to the con. Our photographer Victor was absolutely wonderful working with the cosplayers! We couldn’t have wished for a better experience for all! So without further ado, the best cosplay at Sherlocked USA!!!

Seven Hells! Thrones The Musical Parody is Great!

Just over a week ago the Nerd Out Team went to see Thrones the Musical Parody in Los Angeles! I had seen a lot of promotion for this theater event. On top of the fact that their dates had been extended! Well, if it was good enough that they extended the dates I figured it had to be good! Right? Seven hells yes!

Some Home Entertainment

The story centers around a woman whose life is falling apart. She’s going through a divorce and is in need of cheering up. In comes her friend’s suggestion of introducing her to Game of Thrones. They try to convince her of it’s merits by performing parts of the show for her. With a good amount of their own interpretations which only add to the hilarity.

Touching on some of the touchstones of the series, they beautifully wave in some fan favorite pieces, while also reminding us of some of the more ridiculous parts of the show. But hey, it wouldn’t be Game of Thrones without some murder, infanticide, and more! They even poke fun at some of the shows shortcomings likes will Tyrion’s accent ever improve? The acting was A+ for this event. The Nerd Out team was full of belly laughs throughout the show.

Sold Out Show

“Born from the twisted minds of Baby Wants Candy, one of the most exhilarating improv ensembles in the world, “Thrones! The Musical Parody” completely sold out its entire run in 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, followed up with sold-out performances at London’s Leicester Square Theatre. This hilarious musical creation is an absolute must-see performance.”

The Los Angeles performance currently ends March 26th, while the Chicago performance ends March 19th. Make sure to hurry and get your tickets for this show before it disappears!

Thrones The Musical Parody in Los Angeles and Chicago are listed on our calendar.
