MY BLOODY VALENTINE is the best slasher ever made about the world’s most pointless holiday, because it’s the only slasher ever made about the world’s most pointless holiday. But it also happens to be the best “mine shaft” horror movie ever made, which is not code for anything except THIS MOVIE RULES! Twenty years ago, the town of Valentine’s Bluff was unnerved by the killing spree of miner Harry Warden, who was angry about a Valentine’s Day dance. Warden vowed to return with his pick-axe if the dance ever happened again. Guess what?! Dropping somewhere between the working class grit of HARLAN COUNTY U.S.A. and the trash ’n’ slash mayhem of FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2, MY BLOODY VALENTINE is a dreamy, ultra-violent triumph of golden-age-slashering. This movie will make you feel great about hating Valentine’s Day all over again.

Based on how much fun everyone had last year, we’re bringing back our Be My Player 2 Beer pairing dinner for Valentines day!

Mario and Princess Peach, Link and Zelda, Cloud and Aerith, Squall and Rinoa… video games have no shortage of epic romances. That being said, gamers tend to be pretty laid-back in love, so that’s the approach we’re taking to celebrate Valentine’s Day at 8-Bit Aleworks.

Prior to opening a brewery, when they still had time for time for such celebrations, Ryan and Krystina spent every Valentine’s Day for almost a decade with takeout Chinese food and a cheesy movie of Mrs. 8-Bit’s choosing. This year, 8-Bit’s Player 1 and Player 2 are bringing their tradition to you! With the help of Mein Man Food Truck. Spend an evening enjoying a 4 course meal of Chinese food, along with locally made bon bons that are being infused with our beers! Each course is paired perfectly with 8-Bit brews and a few other special treats, we’re even letting you pick between Ryan or Krystina’s favorite main course (Honey Walnut Shrimp or Beef and Broccoli). If you’re looking for a unique and relaxed way to spend February 14th, join us at 8-Bit Aleworks with your favorite Player 2!

Tickets are $80 per couple and must be purchased in advance. Tickets are available for sale directly through 8-Bit Aleworks either on our online store or at the brewery. Please be sure to select your main course when buying online.

We’ve only got 36 seats for this event and like all of our beer dinners you’ll get to meet new friends at your table!

In addition to watching the film one hour early, fans attending will see exclusive content, receive a collectible coin, and be given a special event-only concessions offer.

After making a powerful debut in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, King T’Challa/Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) returns to the big screen in a powerhouse solo movie. Taking place in the secluded, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda, BLACK PANTHER sees T’Challa battling the combined forces of exile Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) and arms dealer Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis). With the aid of the CIA and Wakanda’s all-female special forces, T’Challa must battle his new foes for the future of the country – and the world.

Celebrated director Ryan Coogler (CREED, FRUITVALE STATION) continues his run of telling great black stories in BLACK PANTHER. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first movie entirely about a person of color, it’s an adventure laden with espionage, action, and textured with imaginative Afrofuturist designs.

With a dynamite cast including Lupita Nyong’o, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Danai Gurira, BLACK PANTHER is an exciting new chapter in the Marvel saga – and a critical lead-up to Summer 2018’s AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.

10. Los Angeles, CA – The Ultimate Holiday Movie: Die Hard (35mm)

That’s right. DIE HARD. 35mm. You’ve seen the meme: there are those who think Die Hard is a Christmas movie. . .and there are those who are wrong. We got a great personal collector to loan us his amazing 35mm print. This is THE 1980’s ACTION MOVIE.

Bruce Willis, as New York cop John McClane, comes to LA to try and patch things up with his estranged wife, Holly (played with steely yet vulnerable perfection by Bonnie Bedelia). After a blow-out argument at Holly’s office’s Christmas Eve party, McClane and Holly are surprised by the arrival of criminal mastermind, Hans Gruber (played by Alan Rickman in THE DEFINITIVE 1980’s VILLAIN performance), and his merry band of bank robbers as they take over the building and hold everyone hostage. As of yet unmatched for its minute by minute explosions, laughs, cocky swagger, and gonzo performances. You want to believe in the holidays again? Merry Christmas, mother f@!kers!

Our Annual Holiday Party!

90s wunderkind Macaulay Culkin stars as know-it-all Kevin McCallister, who lives the childhood dream when he wakes up to find his typically bustling house (with worrisome mother, irritating uncle, bully of an older brother) all gone. Accidentally left behind from the family trip, Kevin lives it up with endless junkfood and all access to his brother Buzz’s secret stash of sports cards and Twinkies.

What starts out as the perfect staycation quickly becomes a battleground when two conniving burglars (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern) try to run a suburban con.

Full of hijinks and hilarity, this ingenious film written by John Hughes and directed by Chris Columbus, still is the biggest holiday hit.

Grab your Talkboy and join our pajama party in an opulent movie palace. Show up in your PJs (your fun day best) for an ice cream bar to end all ice cream bars and a photo studio for the 90s kid inside! DJs, live music, bars (21+ w/ valid ID) Pajamas or holiday attire strongly suggested.

A Zombie variation called BRAINS! pays homage to Night of the Living Dead, and is served in a skull tiki mug and topped with a candy brain. The coffee concoction that signifies the start of fall brought forward David S. Pumpkins, a mix of rums, sherry, pumpkin, spice, and coconut.

3. London, UK – The Addams Family in Concert

Film Concerts Live! proudly presents the delightfully twisted comedy fantasy The Addams Family, with composer Marc Shaiman’s charming and imaginative orchestral score performed live to picture!  The all-star cast features Golden Globe nominee Angelica Huston as the alluring Morticia Addams, Raúl Juliá as the suave and devilish Gomez Addams, Christina Ricci in her breakthrough role as daughter Wednesday, and the inimitable Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester.

It’s 25 years since wealthy Gomez Addams’ older brother Fester disappeared.  When the family’s lawyer (Dan Hedaya) discovers that the son of a local loan shark bears a striking resemblance to Fester, he hatches a plan to bring Gomez’ long-lost brother back to life in order to take control of the family’s vast fortune.  But the Addams clan soon proves more than the unscrupulous lawyer bargained for.  As the imposter Fester grows closer to the family, the line between impersonation and reality blurs, and he begins to recall memories that he never knew existed.  Could he truly be an Addams after all…?

Game of Thrones: The Musical Heading to SDCC

Calling all houses! Are you a Game of Thrones fan? Are you attending San Diego Comic Con? If so, we have the best of both worlds for you! Introducing Game of Thrones: The Musical! Cause if the Red Wedding didn’t get your blood pumping, this will!

Game of Thrones: The Musical

GoT The Musical is an unauthorized parody performing during SDCC. The musical includes iconic scenes from the hit HBO show, but instead written as a parody. Spanning 8 showings in a very special, limited engagement during SDCC. The first show is Thursday night at 6pm, at the Tenth Avenue Arts Center. Shows continue through the weekend, with the final performance at 1pm on Sunday.

The Story

What’s the plot of this satirical play? After all, Game of Thrones oozes with destruction, sex, and bloodshed. What will this show have to offer? I drink and I know things, so let me tell you…After accepting the King’s “Hand Job”, Ned Stark must protect the North and his family without losing his head. The incestual Lannisters and power hungry Targaryens are also out to capture the throne and no amount of singing and dancing is going to stop them!

From the teams behind “Lost: The Musical” and “Once Upon A Time: The Rock Opera” comes a great night out at the theatre that will have your toes tapping and hands clapping – providing you still have both hands.

The Soundtrack

The soundtrack is available via digital download or CD. Song titles include “All Men Must Die”, “You Can/Can’t Trust Anyone”, and “Let’s Go to War.”

May the Force of July Be With You

In a galaxy far, far away there was a Force of July Boat Party! This past weekend in San Diego was a Star Wars party like none other I’ve ever attended. The Force of July party was held by LoveLife on a Hornblower boat which took us around the San Diego bay. Starting around sunset and finally docking around 10pm. Sadly, it was cloudy so we couldn’t see any stars from galaxies far, far away. But, there was there was plenty other force worthy things to see…

Party All Night

It all started at the pre-party at Kettner Exchange. Our Brand Advocate and Social Media master Emilee Jean Adamson was in attendance and had a great time! Then line up for the main event began. It was definitely interesting watching all the guests arrive. It was a mix of die-hard Star Wars fans and those who appeared to be the usual party crowd of San Diego, making it an eclectic group of attendees. This was LoveLife’s second year doing a Star Wars themed party. Previously, it had taken place during the San Diego Comic Con weekend which drew more of the SDCC crowd.

Play It Mr. Wookie DJ

For being a Star Wars themed party I expected some mixing of Star Wars score into the house music. However, that didn’t seem to be the case. If one of the DJs did that, I missed it. The music was still pretty solid and there were loads of people up on the top deck where the DJs were. Aside from the music there was a photo booth with props guests could utilize (see below). Food and drink were also available.

Use the Force

The coolest thing at any Star Wars event is always the light saber battles! While there wasn’t a whole lot of space on the top deck, we did make it work! Emilee and some other attendees battled it out against the dark side! The party didn’t stop at the boat though! It went onto the Blonde Bar! While my crew didn’t forge ahead, a number of other guests did and had a blast! The Force of July was definitely an experience I’ll not soon forget!

Augmented Reality is Everywhere but Nowhere

Grab your phones and make sure they have a full charge and head downtown to LADADSpace for the Everywhere but Nowhere Augmented Reality and  Virtual Reality pop-up instillation.  We had a chance to visit the pop up this weekend and the experience was out of this world. This interactive exhibit is a look at groundbreaking work in the augmented and virtual realities that go well beyond what you have seen before.

Transformation of VR Headgear

The gallery walls are lined with over 30 Raku ceramic heads showing the progression of VR headgear as it’s transformed over the years.  The large heads with the beautiful sculpture work and Raku technique will draw you around the room as the VR equipment evolves.

Integration with Apps

Among the masks hang interactive AR prints that hide secrets and the reason you want to venture to the gallery with a fully charged phone. The Zenka Ar prints work with their app.  Download and open the app and hold it up in front of the prints around the gallery and watch them come to life.  Each piece has different AR animations when you view through the app so I won’t spoil how each one comes to life but in a world where everyone is on their phones all the time it’s a beautiful way to use that device to view the world in a whole new way.

Michael Frenchs’ interactive piece is featured prominently in the center of the gallery.  It looks like an overturned rowboat covered in wires but using his app the piece comes to life.  Hashtags and twitter feeds control the motors attached all over the boat in real time, our words in the ether create a digital piece of art that’s alive and ever changing.  Hard to describe but so visually satisfying as you interact with the piece.

Universe of Sculptures

Blortasia art is displayed throughout the gallery.  Combining physical art and VR Kevin Mack has created 3d art that you can experience not only as physical art but it’s a world you can explore in Virtual Reality.  Soar through this universe of sculptures as they move and change and evolve. The VR experience is not available during all gallery hours so please check their website to confirm.

From Blortasia to Augmented Realty is a perfect transition before you head out back into the LA Arts district where more surprises have been hidden around the area. Augmented reality takes real elements, geo-locations and interactive materials and blends everything together.  Using the Layar App you can see the gallery is the first of multiple locations around the arts district that you can find those hidden AR gems.

As we blend reality and the virtual world artists have an open landscape to work in.  LADADSpace has created a cool environment to showcase AR and VR to show its use beyond what we have become accustom to.

LADADSpace is located in the LA Downtown Arts District across from Barcade 82 near the intersection of East 3rd st and Traction Ave.  Close to Angel City Brewery, Hauser & Worth gallery, surrounded by a variety of local eateries as well as shopping it’s a great location to spend and afternoon and get in some AR knowledge.

Seven Hells! Thrones The Musical Parody is Great!

Just over a week ago the Nerd Out Team went to see Thrones the Musical Parody in Los Angeles! I had seen a lot of promotion for this theater event. On top of the fact that their dates had been extended! Well, if it was good enough that they extended the dates I figured it had to be good! Right? Seven hells yes!

Some Home Entertainment

The story centers around a woman whose life is falling apart. She’s going through a divorce and is in need of cheering up. In comes her friend’s suggestion of introducing her to Game of Thrones. They try to convince her of it’s merits by performing parts of the show for her. With a good amount of their own interpretations which only add to the hilarity.

Touching on some of the touchstones of the series, they beautifully wave in some fan favorite pieces, while also reminding us of some of the more ridiculous parts of the show. But hey, it wouldn’t be Game of Thrones without some murder, infanticide, and more! They even poke fun at some of the shows shortcomings likes will Tyrion’s accent ever improve? The acting was A+ for this event. The Nerd Out team was full of belly laughs throughout the show.

Sold Out Show

“Born from the twisted minds of Baby Wants Candy, one of the most exhilarating improv ensembles in the world, “Thrones! The Musical Parody” completely sold out its entire run in 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, followed up with sold-out performances at London’s Leicester Square Theatre. This hilarious musical creation is an absolute must-see performance.”

The Los Angeles performance currently ends March 26th, while the Chicago performance ends March 19th. Make sure to hurry and get your tickets for this show before it disappears!

Thrones The Musical Parody in Los Angeles and Chicago are listed on our calendar.

LudoSport: The Network of Sporting Lightsaber Combat

This just in: Star Wars is back, and it has reached and inspired more fans than ever. Some of these fans have taken the art of Lightsaber fighting and created an entire international network. It’s called LudoSport International.

LudoSport History:

The debate over the practicality of light saber battles has existed since the franchise debuted in the 70’s. In the last decade or so, thanks largely to the connectivity of social media, the concept of making light saber combat leagues became more of a reality. In 2005, Saber Wars was founded, with a loose group of choreographers and combatants filling its rosters. Many of the members came from New York Jedi, a group that has grown far larger since then, performing stage combat at conventions, corporate events, and even the debut of the first Star Wars stamp at the Empire Post Office in 2007.

The Network:

LudoSport International originated in Milan and now has academies all over Europe including posts in Sweden, Russia, England, Ireland, France, Spain, Boston and San Francisco. Each academy teaches a range of skills, covering all seven forms of light saber battling as detailed in Star Wars canon. The academy programs include duels, demo teams, and seminars for both students and instructors. Students are individually ranked, and all pupils in the network can challenge one another worldwide to a duel.

National tournaments are held annually, with awards going to categories like Best Style, Best Technique, Best Sequence, Best Fight, Best Jedi, Best Sith, Best Padawan and Best Youngling. The winners of the national tournaments go on to the international championship, with competition restricted to the top ranked students only.

The Styles:

Students progress through the seven styles of saber fighting in order. The progression is intended to add in attacking and defending skills without ever compromising with the pupil has already learned. The first style is Shii-Cho (a defensive-minded style) that takes students approximately a year and a half to master. Next is Makashi, a style focused on speed and quick strikes. Third is Soresu, a skill focused on fluidity and counter strikes. Fourth is Ataru, an acrobatic style that is used to keep one’s enemy off-balance. Fifth is Djem-So, wherein the student develops top levels of speed and unpredictability. Sixth is Niman, which incorporates all of the previous styes in a manner that minimizes effort to maximize counter strikes. The final style is Vaapad, a focus on self-control to maximize harmony and domination.

The Rules:

There are ten rules to competing in LudoSport events.

  1. The Light Saber – 3 types are allowed (short, long, and double)
  2. Combat Apparel – combatants must wear apparel that matches their individual rank
  3. The Combat – typical events are 1:1, however other types of combat can be included depending on the event and coordinators
  4. The Combat Arena – the size and shape must follow official guidelines
  5. The Target – the entire body is a target, with mortal or non-mortal zones
  6. Points – typically awarded for first touch (as in fencing or sparring)
  7. Validity of Strikes – judges determine the validity of strikes during a duel
  8. Combat Time – typical events do not have a time limit and are decided by points
  9. Loyalty – each fighter must ensure that his or her opponent is not injured
  10. Competition Judges – no scores or ranking is official unless the event is judged by a certified judge as part of the event

Do you have what it takes to try real life training? Are you ready to begin the path to Jedi Knight or Sith Lord? LudoSport International awaits!
